Effective EFT for Stress Relief: Gentle Sessions to Ease Anxiety

4 min read

When anxiety feels like a heavy cloud hanging over your day, finding a gentle way to ease that weight can feel like a lifeline. I want to share with you a calming, nurturing approach that has helped many women find relief and reconnect with their inner calm. Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is a simple yet powerful tool that combines gentle tapping on specific points of the body with mindful awareness. It’s a way to soothe your nervous system and release emotional tension - all in a safe, compassionate space you create for yourself.

Let’s explore how you can use EFT to gently ease anxiety, step by step. I’ll walk you through what it is, how it works, and how to create your own effective EFT sessions for anxiety relief.

What Is EFT and How Can It Help You?

EFT is often described as “tapping” because it involves lightly tapping on certain points on your face, hands, and upper body. These points correspond to energy meridians used in traditional Chinese medicine. The tapping is combined with speaking or thinking about the feelings or thoughts that are causing distress.

Why does this help? When anxiety strikes, your body’s stress response can get stuck in overdrive. EFT helps by gently interrupting this cycle. The tapping sends calming signals to your brain, while focusing on your feelings helps you acknowledge and release them. It’s like giving your nervous system a gentle hug.

You don’t need any special equipment or training to start. Just your fingertips, a quiet space, and a willingness to be kind to yourself.

How to Use EFT for Stress Relief in Your Daily Life

Incorporating EFT into your routine can be a soothing ritual that grounds you during anxious moments. Here’s a simple way to begin:

  1. Identify the feeling - Take a moment to notice what you’re feeling. Is it tightness in your chest? Racing thoughts? Name it gently.

  2. Rate the intensity - On a scale from 0 to 10, how strong is this feeling right now? This helps you track your progress.

  3. Set up your phrase - Create a short phrase that acknowledges your feeling but also affirms your worth. For example, “Even though I feel this anxiety, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

  4. Tap the points - Using your fingertips, tap about 5-7 times on each of the following points:

  5. Side of the hand (karate chop point)

  6. Top of the head

  7. Eyebrow (beginning of the brow)

  8. Side of the eye

  9. Under the eye

  10. Under the nose

  11. Chin

  12. Beginning of the collarbone

  13. Under the arm (about 4 inches below the armpit)

  14. Repeat your phrase - As you tap each point, say your phrase softly or in your mind.

  15. Check in again - After one round, rate your anxiety again. You may want to repeat the process until you feel calmer.

This practice can be done anywhere - at home, during a break at work, or even in your car. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel.

The beauty of EFT is that it can be done anywhere at anytime to help you find relief.

Does Tapping Help Regulate the Nervous System?

Yes, tapping can be a gentle way to help your nervous system find balance. When anxiety flares, your body’s fight-or-flight response kicks in, flooding you with stress hormones. This can leave you feeling overwhelmed and stuck.

EFT tapping works by sending calming signals through the body’s energy pathways. This can help reduce the intensity of the stress response. Research suggests that tapping may lower cortisol levels - the hormone linked to stress - and activate areas of the brain associated with relaxation.

By combining tapping with mindful focus on your feelings, you’re also encouraging your brain to process emotions rather than suppress them. This can lead to a sense of release and relief.

It’s important to approach EFT with patience and kindness. It’s not about forcing your feelings away but gently inviting them to soften.

Creating Your Own Effective EFT Sessions for Anxiety Relief

To make your EFT sessions truly effective, consider these tips:

  • Create a calm space - Find a quiet, comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. Soft lighting, a cozy chair, or a favourite blanket can help you feel safe.

  • Set an intention - Before you begin, take a few deep breaths and set a gentle intention for your session. It might be to find peace, to release tension, or simply to be present with yourself.

  • Use your own words - Your setup phrase should feel authentic. You might say, “Even though I feel this anxiety, I choose to be kind to myself,” or “I accept these feelings and know they will pass.”

  • Be patient - Sometimes one round of tapping isn’t enough. It’s okay to repeat the process as many times as you need.

  • Journal your experience - After your session, jot down any thoughts, feelings, or shifts you notice. This can deepen your awareness and track your progress.

  • Combine with other self-care - EFT works beautifully alongside breathing exercises, gentle movement, or a warm cup of tea.

Remember, this is your time to nurture yourself. There’s no right or wrong way to do it.

Using EFT with other methods of energy healing techniques can lead to profound changes.
